“Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.” – Robert F. Kennedy

Have you missed your seat & selection by a narrow margin? Are you feeling depressed and hopeless about not clearing your exams? Study failure disappointments are intense and overwhelming, but it’s not the end of the world, though it may feel like that at the moment. Failure is inevitable and the first step toward success. Almost every successful person on earth has encountered failure once in their life, but instead of giving up, they’ve decided to learn from their mistakes and bounce back.

The same goes for aspirants. Every year lakhs of students test their luck in competitive exams like JEE or NEET, but only a fraction of them make it to the gates of their desired colleges. Among the rest, some exhibit the courage to accept their failure and reappear for the exam with a new determination. Do they succeed? Absolutely! In 2012, almost 61.9% of students who qualified IIT-JEE and were accepted into IITs were repeaters.  These figures are undoubtedly encouraging for those who fail to pass the JEE exam on their first attempt.

Hence, rather than feeling dejected and forlorn, students should focus on learning from their mistakes and try again with a more robust strategy to accomplish their goals. Understandably, it is easier said than done. That’s why here we present techniques to help students rebound from study failures and achieve their dream success.

Strategies to Rebound from Study Failures

1. Pen down your shortcomings:

Instead of feeling depressed and gloomy due to study failure, students should focus on analysing their mistakes. Try to analyse the situation to determine the actual reason behind failure. What went wrong? Where have you lacked? What could have produced a better outcome? How can you avoid the same mistakes in the future? To enhance your chances of success, look for the answers to these questions and write them down. Identifying the causes of failure will enable aspirants to address them and lessen the likelihood of a repeat performance.

2. Reflect on the lessons:

You don’t fail; either you succeed or learn. Every experience brings excellent learning opportunities, so don’t miss them. Instead, reflect on the lessons and implement them to get favourable results. Make sure you understand what went wrong and what you should do differently next time.

3. Devise new strategies:

As mentioned by Einstein, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result”. You cannot expect to win with the same strategies that have led you towards failure. Instead, devise new strategies while implementing the lessons you’ve learned. Change your approach, study even harder, and absorb as much information as possible, leaving no stone unturned. Recognise your mistakes, be it procrastination, poor time management, lack of prioritising, or incorrect concept/question selection, and alter your approach to rectify them.

4. Move forward with a positive mindset:

The sorrow of study failure can be overcome only by filling your mind with positive thoughts. Instead of dwelling on loss, consider how to rise above it. Develop the optimism that can help you move forward with a positive outlook. Remember that it was just a poor day that won’t happen again. Also, having a positive mindset doesn’t mean you ignore or underestimate the obstacles; instead, it means overcoming them.

5. Seek support from your teachers:

Reach out to your teachers and mentors if you feel low and anxious. Share your concerns and feelings about your exam failure; they will help you understand things better and provide the necessary motivation and guidance to strengthen your preparation. In addition, venting out your fears will calm your mind to make calculative decisions.

6. Do your best:

Don’t let your fears, worries, and anxieties get the best of you, and don’t let your failures define you. To succeed, you must treat failures as stepping stones towards success. Prepare thoroughly for your exams, cover your entire syllabus, revise every topic, practice enough questions, master time management and learn from mistakes. Be confident and do your best; your hard work will be reflected in your result.
