October 5th marks World Teachers’ Day as it commemorates the adoption of the 1966 recommendation by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and UNESCO regarding the status of teachers. These recommendations established benchmarks for the rights and responsibilities of teachers, as well as standards for their initial training, ongoing education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.

In 1997, an additional recommendation concerning the status of higher-education teaching personnel was adopted to complement the 1966 recommendation by encompassing teaching personnel in higher education.
